Every dog has a personality, a story, and something that makes them completely unique. As a pet photographer, one of the things I enjoy most is discovering that personality once a dog steps in front of my camera.
Every once in a while, though, a dog comes along who makes an immediate impression.
Cobain, an incredible Dutch Shepherd, was definitely one of those dogs.
From the beginning of our portrait session, Cobain's intelligence, focus, and discipline were impossible to miss. He is quite simply one of the most highly trained dogs I have ever had the opportunity to photograph.
But as impressive as his training was, there was something else I wanted these portraits to capture: Cobain himself.
His personality. His character. His expressions. And all the qualities that make him so special to the people who know him best.
Cobain was trained by CANIDAE SOLUTIONS, and the quality of that training was evident from the moment we began. His focus and responsiveness gave us the opportunity to explore different poses, expressions, and ideas while capturing the strength, intelligence, and character that make the Dutch Shepherd such an impressive breed.
But even with all of Cobain's discipline and training, some of my favorite moments were when his individual personality came through. After all, great pet photography isn't simply about creating a beautiful photograph of what a pet looks like—it's about capturing who they are and what makes them special.
Sometimes that's a serious, attentive expression. Other times it's a playful look, a head tilt, or one of those familiar expressions their family recognizes immediately.
Those are often the moments that create the most meaningful portraits.
Looking at portraits of a highly trained dog like Cobain might make some pet owners wonder whether their own dog would cooperate for a professional photography session. The good news is, your dog doesn't need to be perfectly trained or know how to pose.
Every pet brings something different to a session. They may be an energetic puppy who doesn't want to sit still, an older dog who needs a little extra time, or a longtime companion who simply wants to stay close to their person. That's all part of the experience. Cobain_Dutch_Shepherd_Blog_RL_C…
A pet portrait session isn't about expecting every dog to behave the same way. It's about working with their personality and creating opportunities to capture authentic expressions and moments.
That's exactly why I enjoy pet photography so much. Every animal brings something different to the camera, and I never quite know what we're going to create until we get started. Cobain_Dutch_Shepherd_Blog_RL_C…
Cobain brought intelligence, discipline, strength, and plenty of personality to his session, making him an absolute pleasure to photograph and creating portraits that celebrate what makes him such a special dog.
